American Hospital Association Names VCHS Auxiliary Finalist for National Volunteer Award

ORD, Neb. – The American Hospital Association (AHA) recognized the Valley County Health System (VCHS) Auxiliary as a finalist for the 2017 Hospital Award for Volunteer Excellence (HAVE). For more than three decades, the AHA HAVE Awards Program has highlighted extraordinary volunteer programs nationwide and their impact on the patients, health systems and communities they serve.

The VCHS Auxiliary was specifically recognized for its fundraising efforts through The Second Hand Rose – its volunteer-run thrift store in downtown Ord. The VCHS Auxiliary uses the store proceeds to purchase and donate needed equipment and technology to VCHS. Since opening The Second Hand Rose in 2005, the organization has donated more than 100 items to VCHS with a total combined value of more than $275,000. The most recent donations include defibrillators, a carpet extractor, a stationary bike and a surgery monitoring kit.

As a finalist for HAVE, the AHA acknowledged the value of the VCHS Auxiliary’s volunteer efforts. This includes its promotion of and goodwill toward the health system; its service that exceeded expectations as a result of innovation, creativity and leadership; and its collaboration as a community service entity with a provider organization to improve the quality of life of local citizens.

The Second Hand Rose – located at 1537 M St., Ord, Neb. – is open from 9 a.m – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
